Grandparents Day was on Feb 3rd and we in First and Second Class wrote a story about Our Grandparents. First of all we asked them questions about long ago when they were young. We found out that houses were much smaller than they are now. Families were much larger. The kitchens had open fires. Mothers baked fresh bread each day. Butter was made from cream in a churn. They had very few clothes and shoes. Before electricity oil lamps were used for light. Water was got from a pump. Toilets were in outdoor huts but didn’t have any water for flushing. There was no TV, dishwasher, microwave, computer or satellite dish. Food was very basic. Porridge for breakfast, potatoes, meat and vegetables for dinner and a boiled egg, bread and butter for tea.
Schools were very different then. The old School in Whitechurch was a two storey building. There was a fire in each classroom. Children took turns bringing in coal and sticks to light the fire. There were benches instead of desks. Classes were very large and Teachers were very cross and often used a cane to slap pupils with. They didn’t have P.E., Art ,Craft, Science, SPHE, or Computers. They studied Maths, Irish, English, History, Geography and Religion all day long. Most children walked walked or cycled to school. They had great fun playing skipping, chase, hopscotch and marbles. They helped with housework and farmwork.
Science in action. We designed Bridges and tested the Strength of each by using unifix cubes.
